Swing to Cure Diabetes 2024 Golf Outing

Swing to Cure Diabetes was founded by former University of Michigan football player and Varnum attorney Rich Hewlett and his late wife, Chris. The couple began raising money and awareness for juvenile diabetes research after their son, Jeffrey, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 24 years ago.

For the second year in a row, we will have current Wolverine football players in attendance for meet and greets, as well as photos with foursomes – stay tuned for our official announcement later this year.

About Type 1 Diabetes

There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Type 1 diabetes usually strikes in childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood, but lasts a lifetime. People with type 1 diabetes must take multiple injections of insulin daily or continuous infusions of insulin through a pump just to survive.

JDRF Center of Excellence at the University of Michigan

The JDRF Center of Excellence at the University of Michigan concentrates to yield safer day-to-day diabetes management and improved health for persons with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The partnership with JDRF strengthens our research enterprise and provides clinicians, scientists and innovators at both institutions an opportunity to cross collaborate and share discoveries, harnessing the power of expertise at the University of Michigan. The four projects within the Center focus on:

  • Determine the optimal metabolic environment for beta cell function in people who receive replacement therapy
  • Develop patient-specific profiles and advanced algorithms to guide tailored artificial pancreas technology to improve time-in-range and reduce low blood-sugar events 
  • Identify predictive markers and therapeutic targets for T1D complications
  • Discover the relationship between metabolic profiles, brain function, and psychosocial stress, to minimize the burden of mental health complications in T1D
